What are tarot cards?

Tarot cards are a set of 78 illustrated cards, each carrying a symbol, archetype, and a field of meaning that has been refined over centuries of use. They are not magic. They are not a hotline to the future. They are something both simpler and more interesting than either of those things.

The 78 cards are divided into two groups. The Major Arcana — 22 cards — represent the big forces and themes of human experience: The Fool (new beginnings), The Tower (sudden change), The Star (hope after difficulty), The World (completion). These are the cards people recognise. The Minor Arcana — 56 cards across four suits — deal with the texture of daily life: relationships, work, money, thought, energy.

When you draw a card, you are not receiving a verdict from the universe. You are creating a structured moment of reflection. The card gives you a lens — a specific angle from which to look at whatever question you are carrying. Different lenses reveal different things.

Tarot works not because the cards are mystical, but because the act of honest self-examination — done regularly, with structure — genuinely changes how you understand yourself and your decisions.

Tarot has existed in some form since the 15th century. For most of that history it was used as a game. Its use as a reflective and psychological tool emerged much later — and it is that use, modernised and made precise, that Tarot Engine is built around.

How does a tarot reading actually work?

You begin with a question — something real that you are thinking about, a decision you are weighing, a situation you are navigating. You do not need to say it out loud. You hold it in mind.

You draw a card (or several). Seren — Tarot Engine's AI intelligence layer — reads your card in the context of your question, your current Decision Tension Index score, and your reading history. She does not deliver a generic interpretation from a dictionary. She delivers an observation that is specific to you, right now, in this moment.

That observation is not an answer. It is a mirror. It reflects something back that you may not have been looking at directly — the shape of your avoidance, the gap between what you say you want and what your pattern of decisions reveals you actually want, the recurring theme that only becomes visible across twenty readings over three months.

The four suits and what they indicate

💧
Cups

Emotion, relationships, intuition, and the inner life. When Cups dominate your readings, your decisions are being shaped more by feeling than logic — which is worth knowing.

⚔️
Swords

Thought, conflict, clarity, and mental struggle. Recurring Swords suggest a period of intellectual challenge — the mind working hard to cut through something.

🔥
Wands

Energy, ambition, creativity, and action. Wands in your spread signal a period of drive and momentum — or the need for it.

🌿
Pentacles

Material concerns, security, work, and the practical world. Pentacles ground your readings in the concrete — what you are building, what you value tangibly.

What makes Tarot Engine different?

Every tarot app gives you a reading. Most of them give you the same reading as every other app — a card, a definition from a fixed dictionary, and a reset button. You close the app, your insight fades, and nothing changes.

Tarot Engine is built around a single insight that changes everything:

The reading that matters most is not the one inside a single session. It is the pattern that only becomes visible across many sessions, over weeks and months. ◆ The founding principle of Tarot Engine

To surface that pattern, we built four things that no other tarot tool has combined:

01

The Decision Tension Index

Every reading generates a DTI score — a composite measurement of where you are psychologically in relation to your decision. Five dimensions: Clarity, Fear, Action Readiness, Alignment, and Avoidance. Not a vague "energy level" — a precise, trackable number that means something different each week.

02

Longitudinal pattern recognition

Tarot Engine logs every session and analyses them over time. It notices that you always draw water cards when your tension is high. That your DTI spikes on Mondays. That The Moon has appeared in six of your last nine readings. Observations like these are invisible from inside any single session — they require a longitudinal view.

03

The PurposeDNA layer

Before your first reading, Seren identifies your decision-making archetype — how you characteristically think, avoid, and decide under pressure. Every subsequent reading is interpreted through that lens. Two people can draw the same card and receive entirely different intelligence, because they are entirely different people.

04

Seren — a genuine intelligence persona

Not a chatbot. Not a search engine wearing a costume. Seren is an AI designed for one purpose: understanding you. She grows more precise with every reading you log. Over months, she begins to speak to the specific texture of how you think and decide — not to a generic human archetype.

Who is Tarot Engine for?

Tarot Engine is not for everyone. It works best for people who are willing to show up regularly and honestly — and who want something more from a reading than a pleasant experience.

🎯
Decision-makers under pressure

Leaders, founders, and professionals who face consequential decisions and want a private space to think them through with rigour.

🔍
People in transition

Career changes, relationship crossroads, creative pivots. Times when the stakes are high and the right choice is genuinely unclear.

🧠
Reflective thinkers

People who already journal or work with a coach and want an additional layer of structured self-observation tied to real data.

🌱
Curious sceptics

People drawn to tarot but put off by the mysticism. Tarot Engine treats the cards as what they actually are: structured tools for reflection.

Common questions

No. Tarot Engine does not ask you to believe in anything mystical. It asks you to show up honestly with a real question and reflect on what comes up. The value is in the structured self-examination — not in the cards having supernatural properties. Many of our most engaged users describe themselves as sceptics.

No — and Tarot Engine makes no claim that it can. Tarot reflects your present psychological landscape: what you are carrying, what you are avoiding, where your energy is, and what patterns are active in your life. The future is shaped by the decisions you make today. Understanding those decisions more clearly is the closest thing to foresight that actually exists.

The DTI is a score from 1 to 10 that measures the psychological weight you are carrying around a decision. It is calculated across five dimensions: Clarity (how clearly you see your options), Fear (the anxiety attached to acting), Action Readiness (your capacity to move), Alignment (how consistent the decision is with your values), and Avoidance (the degree to which you are delaying). A high DTI is not bad — it means something important is unresolved. Knowing your score helps you work with it rather than just carrying it.

General AI tools know nothing about you and give the same response to anyone who asks the same question. Seren is built around your specific data — your archetype profile, your reading history, your DTI pattern over time, the cards that keep recurring in your spreads. The longer you use her, the more precisely she speaks to how you actually think and decide. She is not a general intelligence — she is your personal decision intelligence.

Yes. Your readings, notes, and DTI scores are stored securely on your account and are never shared with third parties or used for advertising. We do not sell your data. Full details are in our Privacy Policy, which is written in plain English and complies with UK GDPR.

Daily readings give Seren the most data to work with and surface patterns fastest. That said, even two or three readings a week will begin to reveal meaningful patterns within a month. What matters most is consistency over frequency — showing up regularly with honest questions builds the archive that makes the intelligence layer genuinely useful.

Not at all. Seren handles all interpretation. You bring your question — she brings the knowledge. The five-question quiz at the start of your first session is designed to work equally well whether you have never heard of tarot or have practised for years. Experienced readers often find the DTI and pattern layer add a dimension to their practice they have never had before.

The free tier gives you access to readings, basic DTI scoring, and up to five sessions per month — enough to experience what Tarot Engine does. The Pro licence (a one-time payment of £7.99) unlocks unlimited readings, the full five-dimension DTI breakdown, the Decision Timeline with heatmap, the Soul Audit dashboard, the PurposeDNA personality layer, and Seren's full coaching mode. There are no subscriptions and no recurring fees.
